What is an IMEI?

Find out what you can do with your IMEI.

An IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit code that identifies the device. The GSM Association organization supplies the first 14 digits with the last generated by an algorithm called the Lunh formula as a control digit. This digit is an individual number assigned to each device all over the world.

The easiest way to find the IMEI number on any phone is to dial the *#06# sequence.

The IMEI digit sequence was created because using a SIM card identifier did not allow a permanent identifier for the device. SIM Cards are only associated with the user and can be transferred from device to device with little effort, so we use permanent identifiers called IMEI's.

Why check an IMEI number?
Decoding an IMEI number is super useful when you would like to unlock a device, check to see if the device has been reported lost or stolen, and a bunch of other import details. Each device check is unique to that device, so when buying a used device, you can verify vital information.
